When someone at the White House, NSA, CIA, FBI, or Justice Department has a crisis of conscience and wants to leak the details of some horrible scheme that GWB is forcing on them, they call the Padre. Sure, they may call the Washington Post or meet in secret with Sy Hersh. But most often, they call the Padre and confess their sins.
I’m the Padre.
Because I’m ex-XXX (fill in any three-letter combination you like), I know their pain. I too have sinned, and am worthy to hear confessions.
Lately I’ve been getting a lot of calls, and they’re mostly about the same thing. True to form, your reaction will be this: denial. It’s not possible. They could never get away with it. Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Bush doesn’t plan to step down. Ever.
I know. He can’t do that, he won’t, it’s preposterous. It’s also true. Before you start in on how he could never pull that off, ask yourself how many atrocities he’s already got under his designer belt. Torture camps all over the world. Defying the constitution itself in killing Habeas Corpus (for you dimwits, this means they can haul your sorry ass in without having probable cause, and keep you imprisoned forever). Revealing the identity of a CIA spy. Funneling billions in your tax dollars to Republican-run war contractors.
He gets away with this (and one helluva lot more) because people like you refuse to believe that a president would do this.
Or maybe you just don’t give a rat’s ass anymore.
That will work out just fine when the dictatorship formally begins. If you don’t care that America as you knew it is gone, replaced by a government using 1984 as a textbook, you’ll probably think everything is just fine.
According to my friends inside, this is how it’s going to happen:
- Cheney orders an unprovoked and unannounced nuclear strike in Iran.
- Bush announces that the on-going strikes are necessary to secure peace in the Middle East.
- Bush announces that until this time of crisis is over, it is necessary to temporarily delay presidential elections. FDR did it, after all.
- The crisis is never declared to be over, effectively making Bush president for life.
- Jesus returns and gives Bush the Crown of Life.
Go back to your Big Mac now. It will all go away if you just don’t think about it.

Although I wouldn’t put it past the Bush crime family, there are a couple of things wrong with your theory. Russia has told the US in no uncertain terms that we cannot attack Iran. This is why we are trying to put a missile shield in Poland. Two, China holds a 3 trillion dollar bond, that they will call due if we attack. Three, I’m pretty sure, we have to be a Defcon 2 before even the president can arm the nukes. This has only happened once - during the Cuban missile crisis. And last - there have been many stories of a generals revolt. These are top brass refusing to follow the orders of the president. This happened with Nixon, in which all orders from the White House were to be ignored.

Kmuzu — thanks for commenting. Personally, I can’t imagine Dick Cheney giving a damn what Putin thinks. He sure doesn’t care what Congress or anyone else thinks, so why would he care about Russia?
By nukes, I think we’re talking about “tactical” nuclear weapons, as opposed to a full-scale launch. (Don? Reading this? Do tell.)
The past does not seem to be prologue here — these guys are above the law and above convention. If they want to launch, they’ll order the launch and prosecute any general who refuses, Defcon be damned.
That’s what’s so scary. No laws, no control.

Get a life man! Do you really expect people to believe this? No? Then why are you telling us? So you can be right? And what purpose does that serve? It makes you feel smart, but it does nothing for us. So basically, you’re just doing yourself a favor. No much else to say is there?

If Don said it, he believes it. The man spent years in three-letter agencies and has a lot of connections. Only time will tell if Bush really makes an attempt, but it’s clear he’s contemplating it.

I know Don never mucks around in comments, so I have to weigh in here. This guy is responsible for all but suspending constitutional democracy as it is. Does anyone remember Florida? Diebold? He’s not going to declare a state of emergency like Pervez. It might be a little more subtle, but I think we can all agree that in the US everything is already Under Control.
